CASS CARRIER + CREATOR:

Debra Cass Szidon, Interior + handbag designer.

What’s YOUR story, Debra?  Most of the time, I’m all over the place, but generally speaking, I’m an interior decorator and, as of late, a handbag designer. I’m a serial entrepreneur and a hustler of sorts. I have many ideas, but too little time and patience to see them all come to life. As a mother of three, I like that my story has allowed me to be available and present in my kids’ lives. Thankfully, my husband has been and continues to be super supportive of everything I do. Outside of my “career path” I love to spend time with family, hike with our dog, Loki, futz around the house and work in the yard.

How has being a designer and entrepreneur influenced your children? My kids are super aware of their surroundings and have a strong sense of aesthetics, most likely because, I’m constantly aware of them myself. They also know what COG means, how to figure it out and how to take a good product image. Working from home, they see me both struggle and succeed with my creative endeavors. I get the sense that one of them has an entrepreneurial drive which could be good and bad. I find it exhausting and exhilarating. You need to be strong, patient and kind to yourself to be one. I hope that they are learning that for whatever path they choose.

What advice would you give someone starting their own business? Create and build a varied network of people, hire help for what you don’t enjoy doing and amplify what you love. Know you can’t do it all. Collaborate and celebrate other’s success and work hard to support others.

Congratulations on the Cass Clutch’s new style, The Cassie.  What made you design another? Thanks. I never imagined I would create a handbag, let alone two. It was a combination of two things: client requests and advice from a communications consultant. With Cassie, I can meet clients’ requests by adding a strap, and protect Cass from being a “one-trick pony.” I was stubborn in the beginning because I love the Classic Clutch so much I felt like I was betraying it, quite honestly, I was intimidated by taking on a new design.  Thankfully, I met a great pattern-maker and we dove right into it. I’m so glad I did. I’m looking forward to seeing how it may pivot Cass as a brand.

Now that you have a new style which one is your favorite and which color is your go-to?  I must admit I’m crushing on The Cassie. Its smaller, tapered body is comfortable to carry and sling, but I’m a big bag girl. I like being able to throw everything in it and go. The Classic Cass is so fucking strong I can carry a 6 pack and my laptop (although I don’t recommend it). But seriously, it is a great professional bag. With the capacity for a computer, files and fabric samples, I’m good to go. As far as favorite colors, Imperial Dune, I really gravitate to it. It’s an all season color that adds elegance to any outfit. My second favorite is Presidio Camo.  It’s a great way to add pattern and works with more styles then you would imagine.

How do you rock your Cass, clutched or carried?  Most often carried as a tote but I love it folded on my lap when I’m out or as a passenger in a car. It’s a bit of a security thing.

What is a “must-have(s)” in your bag (Cass Clutch or not)?  Sunglasses, my zippered pouch that has lip balm, a lipstick, face powder, and lady drops. I also always have a small note book and a pencil in there, too.

Lastly what are your hopes for The Cass Clutch?  That’s a big question. I really want it to succeed and honestly to make money. I’d like to have the ability to build a team of people to help out with all aspects of running the company (I’m getting lonely doing it alone) and most importantly, be in a place where I can commit to giving back to a cause that I feel strongly about.
